Job Description
The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking a Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach/Track Assistant to begin as soon as possible.
The Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach/Track Assistant is a 12-month position that reports directly to the Director of Athletics. This position will serve as the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach and an assistant coach for the Track and Field team. The coach will assume all duties of a head coach and assistant coach at the NCAA Division III level. This position will also collaborate with athletic management and personnel, performing additional duties within the athletics department to help with athletic and recreation operations. This position may serve as the university’s athletic recruitment coordinator, SAAC Advisor, and/or other duties deemed necessary for the department to run. This position will contribute to creating and maintaining equity within the athletics department. This position will assist with other departmental needs as assigned, including game management responsibilities.
Essential Duties:
The responsibilities of the coach shall include, but not necessarily limited to, the following:
- Recruit and retain student athletes, maintaining a healthy cross country and track roster with the ability to fulfill NCAA minimum requirements each year for each team.
- Coordinate and supervise Cross Country Home Meets.
- Help maintain and plan the cross country course.
- Help coordinate use of our course with our facilities manager and PIHS/PIMS.
- Be responsible for a specific essential duty that helps athletics operations. This could be one of the following:
Recruiting Coordinator:
– Serving as athletics liaison to the admissions office.
– Regular meetings with the admissions’ athletics liaison.
– Regular recruitment meetings with coaching staff.
– Assisting or coordinating recruitment events.
– Ensuring effective communication between the athletics and admissions department, including the use of recruitment databases.
Student Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor
– Participate in North Atlantic Conference and NCAA meetings regarding SAAC initiatives.
– Help advisor and facilitate UMPI’s SAAC and SAAC events.
– Help build leadership skills amongst SAAC members to help this be a student lead and student focused group on campus serving as the voice on our campus for student athletes.
– Manage and lead all aspects of game management for assigned.
– Coordinate with other departments and external contacts as needed.
– Represent department and university to both internal and external contacts at professional meetings and other special or public events as well as on committees.
– Other duties as assigned (could include Game Management or Gentile Coverage when needed).
Additional responsibilities of the Head Coach shall include, but are not limited to the following:
- Daily coaching (practice and games)
- Build the athletic program/team through recruiting.
- Anticipated athlete and team outcome
- Administrative tasks associated with coaching.
- Public relations and professional development
Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the salary range is mid-$40,000’s plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Previous cross country coaching experience or related experience.
- Equitable appreciation of all sports.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to deal with a variety of people in a courteous, tactful, and efficient manner.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and some holidays.
- Possess superior organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and have the ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to recruit, retain, and maintain healthy sports rosters to meet sport sponsorship.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for extended amounts of time for athletics contests.
Preferred:
- Experience working with student-athletes in an academic setting.
- Experience with facilities and course maintenance.
- Previous NCAA coaching experience.
- Previous collegiate playing experience.
- Familiarity with NCAA standards, rules, and regulations.
