Job Description
- Primary responsibility (more than 50% of their time) is the teaching and instructing of student-athletes in the areas of technique, strategic play, teamwork and safety throughout their assigned Sport.
- Under the tutelage of a Head Coach, an Assistant Coach develops a successful program, including a highly competitive, championship-driven team, a well-developed academic support structure, as well as significant spiritual mentoring of the young men and/or women who participate.
- Supports the Head Coach as they recruit student-athletes who fit and contribute to the mission of Gordon College and of the department. This requires attending Admissions-related functions, significant correspondence to inquiries and travel to watch prospective applicants.
- When possible, participates in professional activities and associations of other college coaches.
- Works alongside the Head Coach to develop and maintain discipline within their specific Sport program.
- Involved in game management for other sports as part of the out-of-season schedule.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Director of Athletics.
Departmental and Community Duties
- Develops and maintains a professional and active relationship with co-workers, faculty and staff, administration, alumni, friends of the college, and trustees.
- Participates in the life of the Gordon College community.
- Attends departmental meetings and functions when possible.
- Knowledgeable of, and adheres to, the rules and regulations of the NCAA Division III, the Commonwealth Coast Conference and Gordon College.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
In order to fully perform the above functions, the incumbent must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities, or demonstrate that the major responsibilities of the job can be accomplished, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some combination of skills and abilities.
- Must profess faith in Jesus Christ as Lord; must accept Gordon’s Statement of Faith; must practice Christian values in daily interactions with students, faculty, staff, and the public as outlined by Gordon’s Statement of Life and Conduct; and must work to advance Gordon’s mission through this position.
- Must have the desire and the ability to be a team player within the athletic department and the institution as a whole. We all work in collaboration in order to best steward our financial, capital and human resources to best accomplish our departmental and institutional mission.
- A bachelor’s degree is preferred, but not required. Past experience in coaching at the NCAA Division III level is also preferred, but not required.
- Effective leadership skills and motivational abilities with highly successful mentoring experiences.
- Understanding and appreciation of Christian liberal arts higher education.
- Ability to be a team player with the athletic department and the institution.
- Strong desire to work with and relate to student-athletes.
- Sound administrative ability with emphasis on organization.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Positive style of leadership.
- Familiar with basic computer operations and able to use common office equipment.
- Ability to operate specialized software for sports administration is desirable.
