Assistant Coach, Track and Field/Cross Country

Summary:

Under the supervision of the Head Coach, Track and Field/Cross Country, the Assistant Coach, Track and Field/Cross Country provides support and assistance of the intercollegiate Track and Field/Cross Country program. The Assistant Coach duties includes but are not limited to the following aspects; Coach/assist with any of the following event groups: Sprints or Jumps or Hurdles, or Multi events. recruiting, managing recruiting database, Arms Recruiting Program, assist with recruiting tours of the University, meet preparation, team travel arrangements, preparation of training/practice sessions, and professional communication in regards to the Coaching staff and individual players.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree plus two years of progressively responsible experience; significant coaching experience or equivalent combination of education and experience coaching at the collegiate level with a commitment to Division III philosophy or equivalent combination of education and experience. Collegiate level coaching experience and experience with NCAA preferred. Certified Strength and Conditioning (CSCS ) certification preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:

  • Demonstrated skills in developing and motivating students both academically and athletically.
  • Ability to recruit student athletes that fit the academic and athletic profile of the University.
  • Working knowledge of NCAA DIII Track and Field/Cross Country rules and the ability to teach critical skills, regulations and competitive strategies and training techniques.
  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of the University, the MAC and the NCAA .
  • Ensure compliance of the program with University and NCAA .
  • Knowledge and experience of the Division III philosophy.
  • Commitment to the values of a liberal arts education.
  • Understanding of teacher/coach model in a NCAA Division III athletics program.
  • Ability to objectively evaluate physical skills in the areas of physical potential and mental capability for intercollegiate athletics.
  • Proficiency in computer use and relevant Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both within and outside the College including, but not limited to, student- athletes, parents, recruits, coaches, athletic training staff, and athletic department staff.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership to student athletes to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance.
  • Ability to work within the team oriented philosophy in the athletics department.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Travel is a requirement of this position.
  • Valid driver license with good driving record required; must be insurable.
  • Must have current training in First aid and CPR /AED or have scheduled date for re-certification.

Physical Requirements:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Position involves both inside sedentary work and outside work on the field coaching and training situations with student-athletes; Major hazardous conditions can result from the operations of field maintenance equipment; Exposure to fertilizer, lawn chemicals, and weather conditions. Evening and weekend hours in all types of weather, with travel between campuses is necessary. Lifting of heavy track and field equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • Promote the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program; to include adhering to and enforcing all Departmental policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of the University, and the NCAA .
  • Assist with development and administration of all phases of the program including recruitment, training, practice, competition, scheduling, and adherence to NCAA regulations.
  • In cooperation with the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach will develop and maintain a system to identify potential recruits and to work closely with high school and travel coaches to recruit quality student-athletes to Stevenson University.
  • Identify and recruit quality student-athletes, both nationally and locally, who meet the high standards established by Stevenson University.
  • Assist with the daily administrative duties of the program.
  • Work in conjunction with the Head Coach to encourage the development of psychological, social, and mental skills necessary for the student-athlete to be successful in the classroom, on the track and field, and in future endeavors;
  • Assist with scheduling for practices and competition, interfacing with administrators and representatives from other schools/facilities.
  • Monitor the conditioning and training of student-athletes working closely with Strength Coach and Athletic Training staff;
  • Assist with travel to and from games including traveling with team on busses.
  • Assist the Head Coach, Track and Field/Cross Country by informing team leaders and individual players of their responsibilities, duties, roles, etc.
  • Cooperate with Stevenson University athletic personnel for efficient utilization of shared facilities;
  • Recruit 20 or more student-athletics that fit the academic and athletic profile of the University.
  • Serve as a role model for the student-athletes by exhibiting ethical and professional conduct;
  • Participate in clinics, exhibitions, and camps, as approved;
  • Represent the Department at professional, civic, charitable, and alumni events, as requested;
  • Represent Stevenson University at various local events, throughout the community;
  • Assist with fundraising opportunities and budget preparations;
