Job Description

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION: Reporting to the Director of Athletics at Converse University, the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Assistant Track and Field (Distance) Coach will through a courteous, helpful, unbiased and professional manner implement and manage all phases of a competitive sports program in accordance with NCAA, Conference and Converse University regulations through a courteous, helpful, unbiased and professional manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Assistant Track and Field (Distance) Coach provides overall management, guidance, and strategy development for the Cross Country/Track and Field (Distance) programs. They will be responsible Implement and manage all phases of a competitive Division II program in accordance with NCAA, Conference and Converse University regulations.

Team Management – (40%)

  • Ensure program recruitment and retention goals are attained.
  • Administer and direct all aspects of the program.
  • Submit and maintain annual budgets.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the athletic team as well as to the individual needs of the team members.
  • Academic monitoring of student-athletes.
  • Work toward team unity as well as the general unity of the University.
  • Initiate and follow a team program and schedule that is consistent, reasonable, and effective for the student-athlete and the team.
  • Provide regular support and direction to student-athletes.
  • Make retention of student-athletes a goal and priority.
  • Assist in managing social media accounts.
  • Promote, as well as monitor, the physical, emotional and social welfare of student-athletes.
  • Plan and implement procedures for home and away contests (food, travel, cash requests).

Program Management – (10%)

  • Develop an annual line-item budget and closely monitor the allocation and expenditures of funds to maintain a balanced budget.
  • Plan and carry out in-season conditioning and practices, evaluate team and individual performance.
    Prepare and carry out off-season conditioning, practice and other related activities.
  • Establish team and individual goals.
  • Prepare event plans from personal scouting reports.
  • Conduct maintenance of physical equipment and resources.
  • Maintain inventory of uniforms, supplies, equipment, etc.
  • Maintain a complete inventory of all equipment and uniforms pertaining to the sport.
  • Reports on needs and maintenance of facilities and equipment to the athletics administration.
  • Recruit and hire additional Assistant/GA Coaches.

Recruiting – (30%)

  • Recruit quality student-athletes by means of personal contact and correspondence, evaluating ability in person or by video, and on-campus visits.
  • Recruits student-athletes to maintain expected squad size.
    Work closely with the Director of Compliance, Admissions Office, and Financial Aid in recruiting process.

Team Work – (10%)

  • Ensure compliance with Title IX and other University policies & procedures.
  • Work with Director of Athletics on scheduling.
  • Works with Director of Athletic Communications regarding publicity.
  • Works with the Athletic Trainers.
  • Responsible for working with supervisor and other team members to achieve successful results on all established individual and departmental goals and key performance indicators.
  • Understand the University’s policies and procedures and exercise judgment accordingly. Assure that
  • University and student information is handled in a confidential and ethical manner.
  • Manage your staff consistent with University personnel policies. Encourage collaboration among the staff, provide regular evaluation and feedback, and facilitate developmental opportunities.
  • Ensure that all financial requests are handled according to department and University policy.
  • All guarantees must be approved by the Director of Athletics.
  • Participate on campus, conference, and NCAA committees, if applicable.

Community (5%)

  • Create and cultivate professional relationships with the community to build both recruiting and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Build and foster relationships with local, regional, and national high schools.
  • Schedule and participate in community service with staff and student-athletes.
  • Develop and implement team fundraisers.
  • Participate in department fundraisers.
  • Develop and implement an annual summer camp(s)/clinic(s).
  • Represent Converse University at conferences and events as needed.
  • Ensures that Converse is featured in regional and nationally.
  • Actively participates in the development of Converse University’s strategic plan and operational plans and is accountable for carrying out goals that are specific to their area of responsibility.
  • Collaborates with other areas on team goals as needed.
  • Attend departmental staff meetings, clinics, workshops, etc.
  • Attend campus-wide staff meetings.

Other Duties – (5%)

  • Assume game day management duties as necessary.
  • Fulfills commitments to all additional duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics which may include administrative responsibilities.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 1-2 years of intercollegiate coaching experience
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Commitment to liberal arts education
  • Compliance with the University’s Service Expectations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • 3-5 years of intercollegiate coaching experience
  • Strong recruiting background
  • Fundraising experience

GUIDELINES AND SUPERVISION: Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Assistant Track and Field (Distance) Coach position is responsible for all teaching and instruction provided to student-athletes. Responsible for budget management and accounts as assigned. Each of these functions entails decision-making that requires discretion and a significant degree of independent judgment. The coach must develop and maintain a competitive schedule that will allow the team to prepare and compete successfully in the conference, as well as, in post-season play. Requires significant influence and communication with leadership. Problems faced are frequently complex and multidimensional, requiring broad-based consideration of variables that impact multiple areas of the organization.

Work Schedule: Sunday through Saturday – hours vary; includes “after-hours” work throughout the year

Licenses: Valid SC Driver’s License
