Program Overview
Vestavia Hills High School Track and Field and Cross Country is one of the most successful and comprehensive programs in the state, with a long tradition of excellence, depth, and athlete development across cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. Our program currently serves more than 250 student-athletes, boys and girls, across varsity and junior varsity teams, spanning grades 9–12.
We are seeking to add multiple assistant coaching positions to our staff as we continue to grow and strengthen our program. Positions may be filled by teacher/coaches employed by the school or contract coaches, depending on qualifications and availability.
Position Summary
Assistant Coaches will work closely with the Director of Cross-Country and Track and Field and event-group staff to support athlete development, team culture, and competitive excellence. Coaching responsibilities will be event-specific, based on experience and program needs.
Coaches will:
● Lead or assist with event-group training (technical instruction, drills, mobility, conditioning)
● Provide technical feedback during practices and meets
● Support strength training, recovery, and movement work as needed
● Assist with meet-day operations, home and away
● Contribute positively to a values-driven, athlete-centered culture
Employment Pathways
We are open to candidates through two pathways:
● Teacher/Coach (School Employee) – Salary and responsibilities aligned with school employment
● Contract Coach – Seasonal or annual stipend based on role, experience, and event assignment
Compensation is determined by pathway and position, and will be discussed with qualified candidates.
Time Commitment
● Practices typically held weekday afternoons – 2:50-4:45pm
● Meets primarily on Thursday (JV) Saturday (Varsity)
● Commitment starts in August and runs through May
● Cross-Country, Indoor, and outdoor opportunities available

Strong candidates will demonstrate:
● Experience coaching high school track and field or cross country
● Ability to positively motivate, inspire, and mentor student-athletes
● Strong communication and collaboration skills
● Flexibility and willingness to work within a large, multi-coach staff
● A growth mindset aligned with long-term athlete development
