Job Description

 

Position Overview: The position will assist the Head Coach and assistant coaches with the organization, administration, and development of all aspects of The University of New Mexico Track & Field / Cross Country program. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, home meet management, athlete recruitment, travel and home meet logistics, operational support, and assisting with the daily operations of a Division I athletic program.

Position Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Athlete Development: Supervise daily cross country and distance track practices. This includes overseeing technical development, assisting the head coach with individual and group training sessions, and consulting with student-athletes on weekly running volumes and supplemental training.
  • National & International Recruiting: Identify, evaluate, and actively recruit elite distance prospects locally, nationally, and internationally while strictly complying with all NCAA Division I rules.
  • Meet Operations & Travel: Assist in organizing travel logistics, itinerary planning, entry verification, and hosting home events at UNM facilities across the cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track seasons.
  • Academic & Administrative Oversight: Monitor student-athlete academic progress and assist with general program logistics, administrative tasks, and social media management.
  • Official Visits: Plan travel, lodging, logistics, campus tours, and academic meetings for all on-campus prospective student-athlete visits.
  • Team Culture: Help foster a cohesive team culture focused on and driven toward academic and athletic success.
  • Fundraising & Outreach: Assist with all program fundraising initiatives and volunteer/community service opportunities.
  • Rules Compliance: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and ensure strict compliance with all NCAA, Mountain West Conference, and institutional rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to the safety, health, and welfare of student-athletes.
  • Ability to work a highly flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and irregular hours.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with the coaching staff and support the program vision established by the head coach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior coaching experience and/or competitive experience as a collegiate athlete.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • High level of initiative with the ability to solve problems independently and creatively.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and intrinsically driven.
  • Strong management and leadership skills, with a proven ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and meet tight deadlines as directed by the head coach.
