Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: In collaboration with the head coach and athletic administrative staff, the assistant coach plans practices to teach, encourage and develop student-athlete skills and game techniques within the sprint-events. Assists the head coach in the organization and administration of all aspects of the intercollegiate cross county and track/field programs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Head Coach – Cross County & Track/Field
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision of student personnel
CORE DUTIES:
- Assist the head coach in teaching skills and strategies for track/field in the traditional and non-traditional seasons within the sprints-event group.
- At the direction of the head coach, coach track/field team members individually and in groups, plan and demonstrate appropriate game techniques within the sprints events.
- Coordinate year-round instruction with players in accordance with University, Conference and NCAA bylaws and regulations
- Monitor the academic development of track/field student-athletes, ensuring academic progress to graduation
- With appropriate certification from a national recognized governing body, develop in track/field student-athletes an understanding of proper sports nutrition, personal health and safe strength development
- Create a positive and healthy team culture that encourages learning and development
- Additional support and supervisory duties as assigned by Head Coach including assisting all athletes on the Women’s and Men’s Track & Field Teams.
- Supporting community service learning program/endeavors organized by and for the teams.
- Support and promote leadership development and student-athlete motivation through programs such as Peer Mentors, Captain’s Council and SAAC.
- Engage in recruitment of track & field athletes to the program where adhering to NCAA policy. This can include phone calls, off-campus attendance at track competitions, meeting/speaking with prospective recruits on-campus and help manage/track them through the application process at BSU.
- Support and assist in fund-raising and alumni relations as needed.
- Adhere to and support all rules, conditions and regulations as set forth by Bridgewater State University, Conference affiliations and the National Collegiate Athletic Association pertaining to all aspects of the team’s management.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirement qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or three-four years of recent collegiate coaching and/or playing experience required
- Successful completion of the NCAA Division III Rules Test for Coaches by the 2nd full week of the playing and practice season
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences (i.e., students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, administration and community)
- Current certification in First Aid / CPR (AED)
- Ability to work evening, weekends, and holidays as playing and practice season schedule dictates.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs. with appropriate accommodation
Preferred qualifications:
- Previous coaching experience at the High School or Collegiate level.
- Experience with Sprints.
- Experience with ARMs recruiting database management.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
