Job Description

Furman University seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Cross Country/Track Coach. This is a 12-month full-time position that involves working under the Head Cross Country and Track Coach in collaboration with fellow assistant coaches to conduct a nationally competitive Division I cross country and track program. Operational duties in this position include recruiting, training, travel, alumni relations, equipment and compliance-related tasks for distance athletes (800m to 10,000m & Cross Country). This position will work with both Men’s & Women’s student-athletes as outlined by the nature of a combined program structure.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Assist with facilitation of practice and competition including attending, planning and executing daily practice and compilation of training data
• Recruitment of student-athletes including phone calls, travel to evaluate prospects, electronic and hand-written correspondence and coordinating and executing unofficial/official visits as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations.
• Maintenance and development of alumni relations and correspondence related to program updates, fundraising initiatives and donor support surrounding home/local competition and university-wide campaigns.
• Assist with home meet management.
• Assist as assigned projects as directed by the Head Coach.
• Attend and facilitate individual student-athlete meetings with other program staff.
• Help foster an environment of academic excellence in conjunction with university and athletic department academic support.
• Organize and conduct necessary paperwork for various aspects of team travel including but not limited to: transportation, accommodations, meals and/or meet entry.
• Collaboration with head and assistant coaches for the purposes of executing practice and competition plans, recruiting efforts and any and all duties related to the operation of the program.
• Assisting staff on public relations and social media promotion of the men’s & women’s cross country programs.
• Assist staff in annual summer cross country camp which takes place at Furman University.
• Assist head coach in maintaining practice venues and team areas.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree
• Preferred 2-3 years coaching experience of Volunteer or Full-Time level
• Preferred experience in recruiting student-athletes at the collegiate level, including assistance on unofficial/official visits
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated enthusiasm and motivation to self-start on tasks that contribute to the mission and vision of the cross country program as dictated by the Head Coach
• Knowledge and compliance of NCAA Division I Legislation
• Willingness and desire to collaborate with staff and student-athletes on a daily basis for the success of the program
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Ability to foster healthy and high integrity relationships with both student-athletes and fellow staff members
• Willingness and enthusiasm to work with a diverse group of student-athletes and a wide range of abilities within the cross country/track program.
• Ability to drive Team Van for transportation to/from practice and competition venues
• Ability to attend work consistently and maintain work schedule necessary for the operation of cross country/track program including hours that do not fall into a normal 40 hr/week structure
• Flexibility in work hours and job demands as a particular season necessitates
