Job Description

SUNY Cortland is accepting applications for a Level 2 Assistant coach for the cross country/track and field program.

The SUNY Cortland Athletics Department operates with the Division of Student Affairs.

The assistant coach assists in all aspects of the administration and operation of a nationally competitive athletic program. Cortland Athletics fosters a student-athlete environment conducive to excellence in athletics, academics, and personal growth through diverse and inclusive experiences at the university and the community.

The position is a part-time (43%%), SL-2, with a 10-month period of obligation (8/1 – 5/31).

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the head coach with all matters pertaining to the total operation of the Cross Country/Track & Field program at SUNY Cortland, including but not limited to:

  • Demonstrating effective coaching through content knowledge, practice construction and execution (including strength and conditioning along with skill development), and demonstrated positive interactions in the affective dimension (e.g., interpersonal interactions, enthusiasm, respect and rapport).
  • Maintaining the level of competitiveness at the conference and national level.
  • Supervision of student-athletes/monitoring of the facilities for safety and security.
  • Recruitment of an adequate number of quality prospective student-athletes in accordance with the NCAA, SUNYAC and SUNY Cortland rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Assisting with the assessment and support of the academic performance of student-athletes to ensure the ongoing eligibility and academic progress; academic retention of student athletes must at minimum mirror the retention rate of the college.
  • Providing general advisement, mentoring and support to student-athletes as well as demonstrating concern for the overall welfare of student-athletes.
  • Ensuring all documentation and paperwork is completed in a timely fashion.
  • Representing the College in a professional, courteous, and ethical manner consistent with the SUNY Cortland mission, vision and campus priorities.
  • Effectively communicate with student-athletes, co-workers, officials, and administrators via technology, in person, and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Possessing the ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgement based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Responding to emergency situations in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree and a background competing in and/or coaching Cross Country/Track & Field.
