Under supervision of the head coach, this position will demonstrate expertise in all aspects of coaching student-athletes. Must commit to building a competitive, quality program that excels academically and on the field of play, while maintaining a positive image and reputation of the department, University, and conference at all times.

  • Assists head coach in all aspects related to running a NCAA D1 Cross Country and Track & Field program. Including but not limited to: organizing, recruiting, preparing, and conducting individual and team practices, training, and competition.
  • Oversees and coordinates one or more specified areas of a sporting discipline and/or components of a team, as appropriate to the sport being coached. Specifically, this individual will be responsible for coaching the throws events (throws: javelin, shot put, discus, weight and hammer).
  • Organizes, prepares, and conducts performance training sessions with the Cross Country and Track & Field teams.
  • Assist the Sports Performance staff in managing the athletic department’s weight room facilities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: facility scheduling, equipment maintenance, supervision of daily weight room operations/activities, fuel station maintenance, performance staff meetings, etc.
  • Assists in the overall coordination of the relevant sports program with various operational and administrative aspects of the program, including but not limited to: coordinating team travel; assisting with institutional camps; coordinating and managing team equipment/apparel, etc.
  • Represents the sports program to various institutional entities and externally to media, government agencies, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Complies with all NCAA, Conference, University, and Department of Athletics policies.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree required. Required certification/licensure in NSCA (CSCS) or CSCCa (SCCC).

Experience: One to three years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. The ideal candidate will have experience coaching highly competitive track & field athletes, including throwing events, preferably at the NCAA Division 1 level; as well as strength and conditioning coaching experience.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of throws events and sports performance.
  • Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in area of sporting specialty.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes, as well as athletic recruitment methods and techniques.
  • Skilled in evaluating talent in order to recruit athletes to improve the program
  • Ability to lead and guide Division I student-athletes in area of specialty to include identifying deficiencies and providing instruction to improve overall skill and performance.
  • Ability to build relationships and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to respond to high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skilled in organizing and coordinating.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Thrives in an environment of teamwork, collaboration, and hard work.
  • Ability to travel and work extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
