Under the guidance of the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, work as directed to coach the horizontal jumps, vertical jumps, and combined events. Must have the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a diverse group of student athletes, staff, and alumni. High level of knowledge and understanding of NCAA Division 1 rules and regulations is also preferred.
Specific duties will include, but not limited to:
• Developing and implementing a year-round training program for the designated area.
o Develop and implement thorough, sound and safe annual training plans.
o Develop daily training plans to successfully implement all fundamentals required by the sport/specific position. Make maximum use of all technologies to develop the student-athlete to his/her fullest potential.
o Interact with the student-athlete and his/her family. Provide counsel, guidance, and support as necessary while consistent with team philosophy. Oversee the academic success of the student-athlete and assist with academic problems. Work cooperatively with Student-Athlete Academic Services. Support the well-being of the student-athlete in cooperation with the services of Sports Performance, Sports Medicine, and departments providing information regarding prevention and care of athletic injuries, and health and nutrition.
• Recruit student-athletes that can contribute athletically to the program and also reflect the academic standards of UB.
o Develop prospect database in assigned areas.
o Effectively recruit student-athletes within assigned areas including evaluations, phone calls, contacts to high school/club coaches, and setting up unofficial and official visits, and making home visits and evaluations. Work with the Director to determine priority students and scholarship offers.
o Develop, maintain and foster positive public relations with high schools and club teams. Make maximum use of phone calls, texts, emails, and letter writing.
o Maintain accurate recruiting lists and have thorough knowledge of all NCAA and University rules and regulations.
o Acquire all necessary knowledge to successfully pass the NCAA mandated recruiting exam.
• Various administrative duties will be assigned as the discretion of the Director which may include, but not limited to:
o Program fund raising
o Oversee academic progress of designated student-athletes. Monitor progress, meet regularly with academic advisor.
o Equipment ordering and inventory. Work with the equipment room manager and Director to order new equipment, evaluate current equipment for damage/needed repairs, keep accurate inventory. Work with both parties to ensure accuracy of orders.
• Interact professionally with support staff throughout the Division of Athletics (e.g., Student Services, Athletic Training, Sports Performance, Sports Information, Facilities, Business Office, etc.). Interact professionally with university faculty, staff and student body on a frequent basis.
• Must be able to travel.
The position is a full-time, 12- month. Work schedule includes evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Two or more years coaching at the collegiate level. Demonstrate successful development of athletes. Demonstrate successful recruiting. Demonstrate a commitment to compliance with NCAA, Mid-American Conference, University and department rules and regulations. CPR/AED certification. Must maintain valid driver’s license. Computer proficiency in word, excel, publisher, PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in related area. Proven track record of developing student-athletes to a conference championship and national level. Three or more years of successful experience working in a Division I Track & Field program. Understanding of NCAA rules compliance. Experience evaluating prospective student-athletes academically, athletically, and characteristically.
