Job Description
Position Summary
McNeese State University is seeking a highly motivated Assistant Track & Field Coach to support all aspects of a NCAA Division I Track & Field/Cross Country program. This position will primarily coach the sprints, hurdles, jumps, and multi-event groups while assisting with recruiting, program administration, student-athlete development, and daily operations of the program.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical coaching knowledge, effective recruiting ability, organizational skills, and a commitment to the academic and personal success of student-athletes. Candidates should possess prior coaching and/or competitive experience in track & field, preferably at the collegiate level.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coach and develop student-athletes in the sprint, hurdle, jump, and multi-event disciplines.
- Design and implement training plans, technical instruction, and competition preparation.
- Coordinate with the assigned strength and conditioning coach in regards to training plans.
- Assist with talent identification, evaluation, and recruiting of prospective student-athletes in accordance with NCAA, conference, and university regulations.
- Develop and maintain recruiting databases, communication logs, and recruiting correspondence with prospective student-athletes, high school coaches, and junior college coaches.
- Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits for prospective student-athletes.
- Support academic success, retention, and personal development of student-athletes.
- Assist with meet preparation, travel coordination, equipment management, and practice organization.
- Perform administrative duties as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Promote a positive culture of sportsmanship, discipline, and competitive excellence.
- Assist in managing and executing home collegiate track meets, as well as high school track meets (indoor and outdoor)
- Participate in alumni engagement, and community outreach activities as assigned.
- Ensure full compliance with NCAA, conference, and university policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Prior coaching and/or competitive experience in track & field, preferably in sprints, hurdles, jumps, or multi-events.
- Strong knowledge of NCAA rules and recruiting practices.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel extensively for recruiting and competition.
- Prior experience in constructing and executing training plans year round.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- NCAA Division I coaching and recruiting experience.
- Demonstrated success coaching sprint, hurdle, jump, and/or multi-event athletes at the collegiate level.
- Experience with recruiting coordination, compliance systems, and athlete development programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong technical understanding of event-specific training and athlete development.
- Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, staff, alumni, and recruits to ensure an excellent student-athlete experience
- Effective time management and administrative organization.
