Job Description

 

Chief Objective of Position
To support the successful development of student athletes both in the classroom and on the field.

Work Tasks

  1. Provides leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student athletes at Christopher Newport University.
  2. Assist with and provides the planning, organizing and coaching within the Christopher Newport University Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Program for throwing events.
  3. Collects and analyzes tactical and statistical data of opponent teams; designs training plans and strategies; analyzes performance of team members and adjusts strategies as needed.
  4. Counsels team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters; consults with university administration and faculty for resolution of problems as required.
  5. Oversees financial aspects of the track & field’s throws program in consultation with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country.
  6. Utilizes independent judgment and renders decisions on a daily basis regarding the track & field’s throws program, with little or no supervision on matters of importance.
  7. Develops and implements operational guidelines and procedures per area of expertise.
  8. Screens and evaluates athletic qualifications of prospective recruits; coordinates with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country and the University Undergraduate Admissions Office to establish academic eligibility and arranges meetings between prospects and the University. Coordinates campus tours for visiting prospective players. Assists with new student orientation activities.
  9. Compiles and analyzes performance statistics for Christopher Newport University Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Athletes.
  10.  Plans off-season physical training programs in accordance with NCAA regulations.
  11. Studies, evaluates and implements innovations in track & field strategy and equipment. Coordinates purchases of track & field related equipment with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country.
  12. Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the NCAA. Responsible for safety rules and regulations regarding use of equipment to reduce liability and to ensure NCAA compliance.
  13. Represents the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events. Participates in professional associations.
  14. Performs public relations and marketing activities to promote the athletic program; performs community relation activities.
  15. Coordinate coach’s clinics and development camps; supervises dress code for any support staff and all team members. Works a variety of schedules and hours consistent with the needs of the position.
  16. Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully support the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
  17. Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work-related absence. Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position. Report unsafe work conditions to your supervisor. Immediately report work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.
  18. This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA’s) related to position
Skill in training or instructing student athletes; excellent interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated skills using a personal computer. Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions; travel and work non-traditional hours; manage people and projects. Ability to foster positive internal and external public relations.

Required Education
A Master’s degree in a related field; or a Bachelor’s degree plus related coaching experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.

Additional Consideration – Education
CSCS, SCCC and USAW certifications are preferred.

Experience Required
Significant and successful demonstrated coaching experience in the throwing events.

Additional Consideration – Experience
Proven experience in recruiting successful student athletes consistent with NCAA guidelines. Demonstrated experience in team management to include assistant coaches and others. Experience in fostering positive internal and external public relations. Experience in recognizing, supporting and referring student athletes for needed academic and personal support.
