Job Description

Purpose
The Graduate Assistant (GA) Coach of Men’s and Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country will provide event specific coaching in T&F/XC and provide administrative assistance for the overall Men’s & Women’s T&F/XC program. The GA will be responsible for assisting with all phases of the team, displaying strong leadership in the assisting of managing a successful college T&F/XC program which will include: coaching, providing support for the head coach, scouting, recruiting, instructing, conditioning, arranging travel, tracking equipment, and meet management. The GA will also have direct coaching responsibilities with the DISTANCE OR THROWING events.

Essential Job Functions

A. Maintaining A Competitive Program

  1. Recruit academically and athletically strong applicants for admission in the selective, highly competitive application pool at Shenandoah University.
  2. Evaluate talent and potential.
  3. Ability to coach all aspects of the sport as assigned by head coach with a focus in throws OR distance events.
  4. Develop athlete skills to a high level of achievement.
  5. Be successful within the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
  6. Assist in mentoring student-athletes.
  7. Maintain the academic priority of Shenandoah University.

B. Budget Maintenance

  1. Assist with the ordering of supplies and equipment for the T&F/XC program.
  2. Assist with record keeping of all purchases and expenses in order to stay within the budget.
  3. Assist with inventory & care of all equipment.

C. Travel and Scheduling

  1. Assist in the scheduling process for practice times in conjunction with other university teams.
  2. Work in conjunction with Athletic Trainers to maintain student athlete welfare.

D. Education and NCAA/ODAC Compliance

  1. Have knowledge of and demonstrated practical application of NCAA Rules and Regulations as related to M&W T&F/XC, eligibility, sportsmanship and other compliance rules.
  2. Assist with statistics verification for official records and sports information.

E. Communication

  1. Maintain a healthy communication with other departments on campus, particularly admissions.
  2. Ability to work with and develop strong working relationships with other coaches in the department.
  3. Participate in campus wide events.

Non-Essential Functions

  1. Meet day management assignment.
  2. Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Director of Athletics.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Ability to coach and direct student-athletes to a high level of success and to carry out assignments in a prompt and timely fashion.
  2. Skill in interpersonal communications sufficient to interact effectively with students, colleagues, faculty and staff.
  3. Ability to write effectively.
  4. Ability to travel to professional meetings and conferences as necessary.
  5. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, parents and community members.

Working Conditions
The position will require evening, weekends and travel.

Qualification Standards
Education: Bachelor’s degree required, as well as acceptance to a graduate program at Shenandoah University. USATF Level 1 certification preferred.
