Job Description
Position Summary
The Graduate Assistant for Track & Field at Western Illinois University supports the coaching staff in all aspects of a competitive NCAA Division I program, with primary responsibilities in either distance or sprints/jumps, along with operational and administrative duties. This position is designed to provide hands-on coaching experience while assisting in the daily management and execution of the program.
Primary Responsibilities
Coaching & Athlete Development
- Assist with planning and conducting daily practices for assigned event group (distance or sprints/jumps)
- Provide technical instruction, event-specific training, and skill development
- Monitor student-athlete progress and contribute to performance evaluations
- Support strength & conditioning and injury prevention efforts in collaboration with staff
- Travel with the team to competitions and assist with meet-day coaching duties
- Operations & Program Management
- Assist with practice and meet logistics, including equipment setup and facility preparation
- Manage travel arrangements, itineraries, and team coordination
- Help organize and manage home meets and special events
- Maintain inventory and assist with ordering equipment and apparel
- Perform administrative tasks such as data entry, compliance documentation, and reporting
- Reconcile receipts as asked by business office
Academic & Student-Athlete Support
- Promote academic success and monitor student-athlete academic progress
- Serve as a mentor and role model for student-athletes
- Encourage a positive team culture and uphold program standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; acceptance into a graduate program at Western Illinois University
- Competitive experience and/or coaching background in track & field (distance or sprints/jumps preferred)
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations (or willingness to learn)
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous collegiate playing or coaching experience
- Experience with meet management software or video analysis tools
- CPR/First Aid certification

Graduate assistant positions include a monthly stipend ($1200)plus tuition waiver (employment is contingent upon proof of admission to the Graduate School).
