GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Head Men’s & Women’s Cross Country/Assistant Track and Field Coach is responsible for the overall administration of the Cross Country program and assisting with the Track & Field program, within a diverse athletic department of over 500 student-athletes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct the Cross Country program and assist with the Track and Field program according to all NCAA Division III, Northwest Conference and University rules and regulations
- Proactively support student-athletes from historically marginalized backgrounds
- Follow purchasing and spending guidelines as set by the University and athletic department
- Scheduling of all competitive events
- Completing all travel arrangements as required
- Responsible for all aspects of practice preparation and competition coaching
- Responsible for recruiting quality cross country/track and field student-athletes to the University
- Plans and schedules a regular program of practice in-season
- Responsible for keeping practice periods for the sport within the confines of the time specified by department and NCAA policy and with due consideration to the coaching staff and the welfare of participant
- Responsible for administering and working within the parameters of operating, recruiting, assistant coach and work-study budgets
- Responsible for the purchasing of equipment, supplies and uniforms for the program adhering to department policies
- Responsible for the general upkeep and protection of equipment under the jurisdiction of the program
- Responsible for submitting all eligibility forms to the University Compliance Officer in a timely manner according to the guidelines set by the Pacific Athletic Compliance Manual
- Cooperates with the head athletic trainer to ensure that athletes receive quality care, prevention and treatment of injuries
- Attend all Pacific Athletic Department meetings and represent Pacific at all NWC cross country/track and field meetings
- Complete financial reports of all trips away from home where money has been advanced and keeps accurate records when expenses are to be repaid
- Works with the Sports Communications Office to promote the sports of cross country/track and field
- Functions as a team player within the department and shares the vision for the future of the department as outlined by the Director of Athletics
COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor student’s academic progress
- Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport
- Enforce disciplined and sportsperson like behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students
- Exercise good judgment in projecting positive coaching behavior. Lead by example in promoting a “class image” for the program
- Encourage good sportsmanship and fosters desirable athlete/coach relationships
- Do not allow athletes to participate until they are cleared for eligibility by the University
- Clear with the Athletic Director any travel that is outside of the region
- Provide adequate and appropriate notice to the faculty for travel that involves loss of class time
- Recruitment of quality student-athletes to the cross country/track and field program
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
Other duties within the athletic department will be assigned to this position. Responsibilities which may be included but are not limited to, intramural sports support, game management and/or other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY:
The head cross country/assistant track and field coach will report directly to the Director of Athletics. The head cross country/assistant track and field coach will be responsible for direct supervision of assistant coaches in the cross country program. The head coach will recommend new hires of assistant coaches to the Director of Athletics for approval.
