Job Description

 

ROLE:
Oversee all aspects of the Men’s and Women’s cross country and track distance program including, training, recruiting, budgeting, academic oversight, PR, & meet management. The position will also play a major role in the Track and Field Season as an assistant coach working primarily with the distance events 800m and up, including the Racewalk.

MAJOR DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 75% Supervision and management of the Friends University Cross Country and Track Distance program. This includes development, execution and assessment of plans for: budget management, personnel management, recruitment, retention, student-athlete development, and day-to-day operations of the program. Operations include communication regarding facility needs, planning and facilitating practices and game day strategies, and collaboration with the Director of Track, Admissions, Financial Aid, FAR, and athletic administration.
  • 10% Serve as an active member of the Athletic Department in department meetings, committees, and initiatives.
  • 10% Develop fund raising projects and collaborate with the Advancement Department to identify and cultivate donors.
  • 3% Participate in various community service projects and University events and serve on Friends University committees as requested by the Athletic Director and or University President.
  • 2% Complete duties of Game Administrator or other responsibilities as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES: This position has supervisory responsibilities for various student employees

OVERTIME NEEDS: As needed and may include some evening and/or weekend hours.

ATTENDANCE: Hours of attendance will be determined by the Director of Track, Director of Athletics and this position, taking into consideration the needs of the student athletes, the sport and the Athletic department.

  • To be knowledgeable of coaching theory, the psychology of coaching and to be able to put this knowledge into everyday practice. Commitment to 3Dimensional Coaching principles.
  • To be knowledgeable of all NAIA and athletic conference eligibility processes and standards and to ensure compliance of those standards.
  • To develop and oversee recruitment strategies and processes that will consistently meet numerical goals of team numbers, new student numbers, retention and graduation rates and will bring in student athletes who will be successful intellectually, spiritually and socially.
  • Impeccable support of the Christian mission and values of Friends University and the NAIA Champions of Character.
  • To foster and build strong working relationship with Friends University faculty, staff and other constituents.
  • To collaborate on fundraising strategies and be involved in the cultivation process.
  • To support the Friends University athletic department and campus community.
  • To articulate the essentials of a Christian Liberal arts university.
  • Serve on committees and complete projects as requested by the Director of Athletics or President of the University.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:

  • Experience: 2-4 years of coaching experience preferred; College coaching and effective recruitment experience preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written, oral and inter personal communication skills are necessary. The ability to motivate and influence others is material to this position. Requires diplomacy, ability to garner trust of others and maintaining confidential information. Ability to lead in an inclusive and developmental manner.
  • Other Skills: The position requires strong financial management, time management and personnel management skills. The individual must possess acute understanding of sport preparation and facilitation.
