Job Description
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supporting the Head M/W Track & Field Coach in all aspects of the coaching and management of the track programs; assisting and supporting game-day preparation; and execution and participation in all aspects of recruiting student-athletes. Additionally, the graduate assistant will lead efforts in the teams’ social media presences on regular basis. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the combined events.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Employed for a 12-month basis with a standard work week of 20 hours; a considerable amount of night and weekend hours will be required.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Recruiting student athletes, create social media posts and assist in the coaching of an intercollegiate men’s and women’s track & field programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Note that all functions described below must be performed, and it is normally the responsibility of the individual in this position to perform them and/or see that they are performed. Functions are categorized as essential and marginal so that consideration can be given to accommodating a person with a disability by reassigning one or more marginal functions if it is practical for such function(s) to be performed by other employee(s).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Recruitment
- Recruit, orient, supervise, and evaluate student athletes according to Mount Mercy University expectations and team standards.
- Assist in meeting annual track & field recruitment goals.
2. Coaching
- Assist in supporting academic achievement of student athletes and make referrals to campus services as needed.
- Assist in regularly scheduled practices during preseason and the regular season.
- Assist in driving vehicles used for transporting players to and from university sponsored contests that are not covered under the department policy regarding transportation.
- Promotes positive public relations within the university and community.
- Generate original and creative social media posts on a consistent schedule.
- Abide by NAIA, conference and university rules and regulations.
- Assist in all aspects of the men’s and women’s track and field programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the head coach or athletic director.
- Conducts the program (i.e., run practices) when assigned by head coach.
- Provides expertise in skills and fundamentals of multiple areas of track & field.
- Attend home and away track meets unless otherwise directed by head coach.
3. Perform other duties and tasks as appropriately assigned which contribute to achieving the goals of the student services department and the well-being of the university.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform routine office functions such as filing and copying.
- Participate in logistical activities such as delivering materials to and picking up materials from the campus print shop and mailroom, storage areas, vendor facilities and other locations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- None.
RECOMMENDED SKILLS/COMPTENCIES:
- Interest in and familiarity with intercollegiate track & field; expertise in 1-2 areas specific to track & field.
- Ability to attend all recruiting trips, practices, and meets as assigned by the head coach.
- The ability to provide budget and fundraising support.
- Clear commitment to and understanding of the mission of a comprehensive university with a liberal arts and professional focus with a substantial resident student population. Commitment to an environment that nurtures cooperation, diversity, and academic excellence.
- Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to quickly get to know many students and the ability to work alternative hours when student issues or programs require it.
- Ability to establish collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and outside constituent groups.
- Ability to prioritize and deal with several tasks concurrently, while maintaining flexibility, high energy, creativity, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a staff where cooperation and teamwork are essential.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at various levels of completion coupled with exceptional organizational skills.
EDUCATION:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Participation in high school or intercollegiate athletics or coaching preferred.
LICENSES:
- A valid driver’s license is strongly preferred.
