Job Description

The University of Rio Grande is proud to announce an opportunity as an Assistant Coach for Track & Field in our Athletic Department. This can be filled as a Graduate Assistant position or as an Assistant Coach who would receive a stipend for the position. There are multiple positions in several event areas open at this time.

This Assistant Coach will assist the head coach in managing and coaching a successful track & field program which competes in the NAIA as a member of the River States Conference. This includes assisting with practice and competitions, as well as coaching, recruiting student-athletes at a national level, design and implementation of competitive strategies and advising and mentoring our student-athletes.
The assistant must understand and promote the mission, goals, values and educational ideals of the University of Rio Grande, as well as the mission of the Department of Athletics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists with event coaching, conditioning plan development and implementation, as well as general practice planning and management in the areas of the throwing events, sprints, and/or jumps. 60%
  • Assists with all competition coaching at home and on the road. 10%
  • Assists with the student-athlete recruitment effort for the Track & Field program. This includes traveling to high school and club contests, evaluating prospective student-athletes, assisting with on-campus visits by prospects and managing the team’s social media accounts 10%.
  • Assist the head coach with managing all administrative details associated with the program including home meet management, travel arrangements, and apparel/equipment purchases. 5%
  • Participate in department service (i.e. coaches meeting attendance, required professional development training in the events areas assigned .) 5%
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. 10%

Education & Work Experience:

  • B.A./B.S. required
  • 1-3 years coaching experience with college coaching experience preferred.

Salary and Benefit Information:

  • If you would like to apply as a graduate assistant, you will receive full time tuition,, room and board for the 10 month academic year or full tuition (without room and board) and a stipend for $6000 each academic year.
  • If you would like to apply as a Part-Time Assistant, the salary is a stipend of $6000 per academic year, or $4000 for working January through nationals in the end of May.

Additional Information:

  • Driver’s license required. Must be qualified to be insured by the university.
  • Requires ability to drive 12-passenger vans.
  • Operates in gymnasium and fields and may operate in varied weather given training needs.
  • Willingness and availability to work some Saturdays throughout the competitive season as well as some evenings for recruiting duties and practices.
  • Position involves sitting, movement and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds in coaching and training situations.
